Su investigaci\u00f3n se centra en el desarrollo de la complejidad social y la formaci\u00f3n temprana del Estado en la China prehist\u00f3rica y el origen de la civilizaci\u00f3n china. Dirigi\u00f3 algunos proyectos de campo importantes en China, como las excavaciones en el sitio neol\u00edtico de Xipo en la provincia occidental de Henan. Actualmente es director de un proyecto de campo en el sitio maya Cop\u00e1n en Honduras, que es el primer proyecto de China en Mesoam\u00e9rica. La comparaci\u00f3n de las civilizaciones maya y china es su nuevo inter\u00e9s de investigaci\u00f3n. Sus principales publicaciones incluyen Desarrollo de la complejidad social en el \u00e1rea de Liaoxi, noreste de China, Auge y ca\u00edda del Centro Ritual Sagrado, Cementerio Xipo en Lingbao, Red de intercambio a larga distancia de la \u00e9lite en la China prehist\u00f3rica, &#8216;China primitiva&#8217; en arqueolog\u00eda, Reconstrucci\u00f3n de la fundaci\u00f3n prehist\u00f3rica de China, M\u00e9xico, signo del a\u00f1o y motivo de haces de cruces en el complejo de \u00e9lite 8N-11 en Cop\u00e1n, Honduras.
